Bluegill

It's hard for Blue Gill to spawn in Colorado. The water is too cold. Bluegill need water in the 70s to spawn. Shallow lakes in lower elevations are most apt to contain bluegill. The bluegill I have found at places like Pueblo and Cherry Creek have been relatively small. I found some nice large, fat, bluegill at Sweitzer lake near Delta Colorado but there were signs everywhere warning you not to eat the fish. Maybe because of lack of fishing pressure was why they were so large, or some kind of radio active thing. At any rate they were fun to catch. About the best place I've found for bluegill is Frank Easement Ponds near Windsor. It's a great place to take kids or anyone who just wants to catch something. There are some bluegill upto 10-12 inches but most are 6-8 inches. The picture above is from Pueblo Reservoir. The best way to catch bluegill is with a small hook (size 8-10) and a piece of worm that just covers the hook.
